Giving Up On Abenomics? S&P’s Chief Economist Sees Japan Stuck in Deflationary ‘Policy Trap’

I met Paul Sheard, chief global economist and head of global economics and research at Standard & Poor’s, a few years ago at a U.S.-Japan financial forum sponsored by Harvard Law School.  Later we met again in New York and had a pleasant lunch together.  Paul is tall, sturdily built Australian whom I could imagine in a James Clavell Taipan (or Anjin-san) role as well as (or better than) academic economist. He has a Japanese spouse and lived for many years in Japan, at least one of which qualifications is to me virtually sine quo non for credibility of foreigners opining on Japanese politics, society, and economics.
