Catherine Putz, Managing Editor for The Diplomat, was one of eight rising U.S. journalists covering U.S. national security and defense issues who participated in a week-long study trip to Japan in December 2018 as part of the Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation (SEED) program. Putz published “The Art of the Balance: Japan, China and the United States” in The Diplomat on January 30, 2019.

Japan Today article examines debate over Japan’s defense strategy

Tobias Harris comments on PM Abe’s political situation in Japan Times, New York Times

Sasakawa USA Fellow Tobias Harris was quoted in the Japan Times and the New York Times on recent scandals surrounding Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Abe’s administration is currently facing backlash over government cover-ups of documents relating to a public land deal with education organization Moritomo Gakuen, and alleged favoritism in a deal to establish veterinarian school Kake Gakuen in a special economic zone in Japan.

Admiral Blair discusses North Korea with The Guardian

Sasakawa USA Chairman Adm. Dennis Blair warned that a U.S. pre-emptive “bloody nose” strike on North Korea would be “high risk and unpredictable,” in an interview for “Former US Military Commander Warns Against ‘Bloody Nose’ Strike on North Korea,” published in The Guardian on February 20. Blair is a former Director of National Intelligence and previously served as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Command.

Ms. Magazine essay examines challenges for women of color in defense and foreign relations careers

Sasakawa USA Program Assistant Brittney Washington outlines some of the challenges unique to women of color as they pursue careers in defense and foreign relations in a recent article for Ms. Magazine. Washington, who co-wrote the piece with Jeesue Lee, a former researcher at the Center for a New American Security, discusses the importance of diversity and inclusion in the national security sector in “To Pluck a Brown Feathered Goose: On Being a Woman of Color in National Security.”
