How Japan Can Strengthen the U.S. Steel Industry

On November 1, US-Japan NEXT Alliance Initiative Senior Director James Schoff published an article with The National Interest on “How Japan Can Strengthen the U.S. Steel Industry.” Mr. Schoff argues in favor of the acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel, urging readers to think objectively about the benefits to multiple U.S. stakeholders including workers, customers, suppliers, shareholders, and the nation more broadly. He stresses that Americans who are employed by other Japanese firms know that they are not corporate raiders and are focused on cultivating long-term relationships through investments in affiliated entities for the success of the business. Mr. Schoff closes by cautioning that the only potential risk would come from killing the deal and depriving a key American industry a viable way to stay competitive against large Chinese steel firms.
