Don’t Push China Too Hard After SCS Ruling

The United States needs to give China space and time to comply to a UN Tribunal ruling that is expected to favor the Philippines over China, Sasakawa USA’s Dr. Jeffrey Hornung said in a July 11 Breaking Defense article leading up to the next day’s decision.

“Of course you’re going to want to enforce the claim at some point,” Hornung said in the article, “but if they ruling comes out 0500 Eastern time tomorrow and they leave port at 0600, then we’re jumping the gun a little bit.”

The ruling “essentially gives China an off-ramp from all the ratcheting up of tensions,” he said. “The problem is no one thinks they’re really going to do that. They’ve played it up so much (that) it’s very difficult to take the off-ramp without taking some domestic political flak…. They’ve backed themselves into a corner.”
