Amb. Zumwalt talks U.S.-China relations and the Trump-Xi summit in Q&A with Jiji Press

As Chinese President Xi Jinping considered his first formal meeting with President Donald Trump, he may have looked to the success of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s summit with Trump as a winning formula, Sasakawa USA’s James Zumwalt said in a Q&A article with Jiji Press published on the eve of the Trump-Xi meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club.

In the Q&A, published only in Japanese, Amb. Zumwalt addresses China’s possible goals for the meeting and issues that are likely to arise, including trade and other economic issues, as well as the possibility for bilateral cooperation on North Korea.

「われわれは北朝鮮の体制が崩壊する危険を受け入れているが、中国は緩衝地帯として朝鮮半島の分断が続くことを望んでいる。これが米中の根本的かつ長期的な不一致点だ。しかし、中国側は今回の会談を失敗させないため、域内の緊張緩和に向け懸命に取り組むよう訴えるのではないか。」
