Tomoko Tanaka-Makino served as a visiting fellow for the US-Japan NEXT Alliance Initiative at Sasakawa USA from October 2021 to March 2022. During her tenure, she conducted research on several topics related to the U.S.-Japan high-tech alliance and wrote a paper on U.S.-Japan collaboration regarding the global deployment of Open RAN and secure 5G networks.
Prior to joining Sasakawa USA, she spent her entire career as a Japanese government official. Her expertise lies in policymaking in the telecommunications sector, with experience at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as a deputy director of First Telecommunications Consumer Policy Division, an assistant director of ICT Security Office, and as an official of International Policy Division. She also worked at the Cabinet Bureau of Personnel Affairs and Office for Postal Reform’s Cabinet Secretariat.
Ms. Tanaka earned a master’s in public administration (MPA) from the London School of Economics and Political Science and received her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Tokyo.
