The Women, Peace & Security Alliance Initiative seeks to break down siloes by bringing together policy practitioners and experts from government, civil society, and the private sector who apply a gender lens to their work.
A signature effort is the Sasakawa USA Women’s Advancement Network (SWAN), which features and brings together mid- to senior-level women leaders who are working within the U.S.-Japan and U.S.-Asia space. SWAN fosters dialogue on timely issues, cultivates opportunities for collaboration, and builds a community of interconnected women. Learn more about SWAN here.
On June 25, Sasakawa USA hosted a Sasakawa USA Women's Advancement Network event featuring remarks by Ms. ElsaMarie D'Silva, Founder of Red Dot Foundation (Safecity) and Co-Founder and COO of Murmur AI, for a discussion on the gender implications of AI-driven transformation in the workforce.
On April 16, Sasakawa USA hosted a report launch of Seeds of Resilience: Lessons from Japan on Human-Centered Paths to Disaster Recovery, featuring Dr. Regardt Ferreira, Director, and Mr. Corey Eide, Senior Fellow, Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy, Tulane University; and Ms. Shanti Shoji, Director of Programs, Sasakawa USA.
On March 25, Sasakawa USA convened the roundtable "Strengthening the Alliance through Women, Peace and Security: A U.S.-Japan Dialogue,” featuring H.E. Mr. Katsuhiko Takahashi, Ambassador in charge of Women, Peace and Security (WPS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
On May 2, 2025, Sasakawa USA hosted a SWAN breakfast roundtable featuring the Honorable Rui Matsukawa, Member of the House of Councillors of Japan.
On March 4, 2025, Sasakawa USA hosted a SWAN luncheon roundtable featuring Ms. Makoto Tsujiguchi, Visiting Fellow, Japan Chair, Center for Strategic and International Studies and Senior Fellow, 21st Century Public Policy Institute, Keidanren.
Sasakawa USA, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan and Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS), hosted a high-level event on January 16, 2025, titled “From Resolution to Revolution: Marking 25 Years of the Women, Peace and Security Framework.”
On December 9, 2024, Sasakawa USA hosted a SWAN breakfast roundtable featuring Ms. Tomoko Matsuzawa, Director for International Cooperation on Women, Peace and Security and Gender Advisor at the Japan Ministry of Defense.
On October 24, Sasakawa USA in partnership with the International Peace Institute (IPI) co-hosted the policy forum, "National Action Plans for National Challenges: Addressing Environmental Crises through the WPS Agenda" Policy Forum.
On August 28, 2024, Sasakawa USA held a SWAN luncheon roundtable featuring several members of the 2024 Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation (SEED).
On May 16, 2024, Sasakawa USA held the SWAN discussion featuring Brigadier General Maura Hennigan, President of U.S. Marine Corps University, prior to her departure to her next assignment at Camp Lejeune.
