Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling coalition won 70 of the 121 seats up for election in the House of Councilors, the Japanese Diet’s upper house. That ensures the Abe government will continue to wield stable control of both parliamentary chambers.

The Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito coalition performed so well that when its seat total is combined with that of several minor right-wing parties and independents, it ostensibly leads a supermajority in favor of constitutional revision. For the first time, a Japanese government may have enough votes in both houses to revise Japan’s postwar constitution.
