Overview

The Women, Peace & Security Alliance Initiative organizes multi-day exchanges between U.S. and Japanese policy practitioners and experts to deepen mutual understanding and foster collaboration on advancing whole-of-society resilience. These immersive exchanges create opportunities to build enduring networks, engage in candid discussions, and translate insights into action. Participants share reflections through post-exchange publications to share their learnings and areas of opportunity with the broader community of policy practitioners and experts.

A delegation of experts on community resilience and disaster risk reduction traveled to Tokyo and Noto, Japan to explore how formal and informal systems can effectively interact and be bridged to strengthen whole community resilience.

Drs. Kiguchi and Yoshida traveled to Japan on a U.S.-Japan Research Exchange to explore the universal and unique challenges that the U.S. and Japan face in promoting women’s advancement in the medical profession, as well as opportunities for both countries to better support meaningful participation and sustainable careers for women in medical fields.

From July 7 to 14, 2024, Ms. Shanti Shoji, director of programs at Sasakawa USA, led a group of U.S. disaster risk reduction (DRR) experts from federal and local government agencies and civil society organizations to Japan to engage with Japanese counterparts in national and local governments, the private sector, and civil society. This exchange aimed to share insights on integrating Women, Peace and Security (WPS) into disaster preparedness and response in both the U.S. and Japan as a way to further bolster community resilience amid the growing frequency of natural disasters. The delegates’ expertise ranged from disaster risk communication to emergency preparedness in public transportation, to post-disaster appeals management.

For its ninth Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation (SEED), Sasakawa USA selected a group of eight American Women, Peace and Security (WPS) experts involved in policymaking and implementation to engage with Japanese politicians, government officials, academics, civil society leaders, and media to exchange insights on how the United States and Japan can work together to mutually advance WPS in the alliance.
