In February 2012, Dr. Cindy Yoshiko Shirata came to talk about Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, reforms monetary policy and undertakes aggressive financial measures. In Japan, daily business continues and it is essential for the public to know the reality of the current economic position.
Shirata explored the gap between the sentiment of executives/managers and the actual financial positions of Japanese corporations based on bankruptcy data. She also discussed the real financial position of Japan, which includes comparison between the financial position of Japanese public companies during the Bubble economy period and the period after the Lehman Shock.
Shirata is Professor of International Business, Graduate School of Business Sciences,Tsukuba University, Tokyo, Japan. She developed and launched a bankruptcy prediction model known as SAF2002. The model has been used by major banks and rating companies in Japan. She is one of the most well-known experts to develop bankruptcy prediction models in Japan.
Her major publications include; “Bankruptcy Prediction Model”, Chuo-Keizai Sha (2003) (Business Analysis Association Award); “Preparing Financial Report using XBRL”, Nihon Keizai Shinbun Sha (2003); “Predictable Information of Bankruptcy” (1999) (Japan Risk Management Association Award).
