Insights from Japan: Civic Engagements Amidst Shifting Demographics
May 2, 2025 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am
On May 2, Sasakawa USA welcomed The Honorable Rui Matsukawa, Member of the House of Councillors of Japan, for the SWAN breakfast roundtable, “Insights from Japan: Civic Engagement Amidst Shifting Demographics.” Hon. Matsukawa, who traveled to Washington, DC through Sasakawa USA’s Integrated Security Dialogue, shared her perspectives on the changes and developments she has witnessed within the Japanese Diet and society as the country experiences profound demographic shifts–including an aging population, declining birthrate, and increased urbanizations. Drawing upon examples from other OECD countries such as Finland and Israel, she highlighted lessons for Japan to learn from on boosting birthrates and promoting work-life balance.
As a representative of Osaka, Hon. Matsukawa also introduced innovative local initiatives, such as integrating elementary and junior high education within a collaborative community center in Toyonaka. The discussion, moderated by Sasakawa USA director of programs Shanti Shoji, covered topics such as political literacy, new forms of civic engagement in the digital age, inclusive social programs, and Japan’s commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
