G-20 Osaka Summit Preview: Goals, Expectations, and Areas for U.S.-Japan Collaboration

On June 24, 2019, Sasakawa USA hosted Ambassador Kazutoshi Aikawa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in the United States, for a special briefing to preview Japan’s priorities for the Osaka G-20 Summit. Sasakawa USA Fellow Tobias Harris moderated the off-the-record discussion and Q&A. Approximately 25 academics, think tank professionals, journalists, and U.S. government officials attended this event.

The G-20 Summit was held June 28-29, 2019 in Osaka, Japan. In previewing the summit, Ambassador Aikawa’s remarks focused on Japan’s desire to promote leaders’ finding commonalities during the summit such as promoting sustainable and inclusive growth of the global economy, strengthening the multilateral trading system and WTO reform, promulgating Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT), investing in quality infrastructure, reducing marine plastic litter, and accelerating economic growth while protecting the environment.
