On May 24, 2011, Sasakawa USA welcomed the Honorable Wallace “Chip” Gregson for a private, off-the-record discussion on the current state and future of the U.S.-Japan alliance.

About the Speaker

The Honorable Lieutenant General Wallace “Chip” GregsonWallace “Chip” Gregson was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs on May 13, 2009. From 2006 until assuming the duties as Assistant Secretary of Defense, Gregson was owner and president of WCG & Associates International, a foreign policy and military affairs consulting firm.

Previously he served as Chief Operating Officer for the U.S. Olympic Committee. From 2003 to 2005 he was Commanding General of Marine Corps Forces Pacific and Marine Corps Forces Central Command where he led and managed over 70,000 Marines and Sailors in the Middle East, Afghanistan, East Africa, Asia and the United States. From 2001-2003 Gregson served as Commanding General of all Marine Corps forces in Japan and before that, Director of Asia-Pacific Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, Gregson is a combat veteran of the Vietnam conflict, where he was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat “V” device for valor and heroism as well as a Purple Heart. He has also received the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun – Gold and Silver Star and the Korean Order of National Security Merit Gukseon Medal.
